How to care for leather straps to last decades

A leather strap is an investment in both comfort and style. Proper care ensures it ages beautifully, developing character while protecting your watch.

Leather straps, especially those crafted for vintage watches, are living materials. They absorb sweat, oils, and environmental factors. Proper care prevents cracking and preserves suppleness. Avoid prolonged exposure to water — even minimal moisture can warp leather over time. For casual summer use, consider swapping to a NATO strap or lightly cleaning leather with a soft cloth after each wear.

Conditioning is key: apply a high-quality leather conditioner every few months, especially on natural or untreated leathers. Avoid silicone-based products or harsh chemicals. Store straps flat or gently rolled, away from direct sunlight, to prevent uneven fading or drying. Rotating straps — for instance, alternating between leather, NATO, and exotic skins — ensures each strap rests and extends its life.

One of my beloved 1960s Heuers, I rotate its straps weekly, maintaining the supple texture of calf leather while allowing a rugged NATO to carry the brunt of casual wear. Decades later, the leather straps develop a rich patina, soft hand feel, and unique coloration — proof that attentive care rewards with beauty and longevity.
